Creating Powerful Teams and Culture in a Long-Distance World

February 27, 2023
10:00 am - 5:00 pm ET

There’s a lot of talk right now about company culture and the effects of people working remotely, or in whatever hybrid way they’ve assembled themselves to get the work done. Organizations and teams are wondering if they can be the kind of connected, productive, engaging workplace they want to be when everyone isn't always in the same place at the same time.

Join us for a special day of virtual learning, interaction and engagement as Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel, authors of The Long-Distance Leader, The Long-Distance Teammate and now, releasing on February 28th, The Long-Distance Team, as the share their lessons and ideas, with several world-class experts on teams, culture, leadership and more.

Each session will ask the questions that you have about team and culture design from the perspective, expertise, experience and wisdom of these experts.

Here's a Look at the Event Agenda...

  • Opening: An introduction and opening comments from Kevin Eikenberry to set up this important day.
  • Using Asynchronous Communication to Build a Strong Culture with Pilar OrtiWe know how culture is built when we regularly interact with people day after day. But what does this means for teams and organisations who have embraced the "asynchronous mindset"? How do you nurture the culture you want to see, and keep a sense of belonging when real-time interactions become less and less common? Join us in this session to tease out the answers to these very timely questions.
  • Build Teams to Build Culture with Chris DyerMusings from a CEO who has managed over 4,500 employees and independent contractors fully remote, and consulted with some of the biggest companies in the world about culture, leadership, and team building. The path for success and failure are quiet clear for creating supporting great teams. You just need to stop messing it all up!
  • Empathy and Understanding in a Remote World with Robert BogueReflecting on the reasons why a project wasn’t successful as they wanted, most people can point to something they or someone on the team missed. It was some detail that was never discussed or a condition never considered. It might have been a person whose input was critically lacking – especially when everyone’s not in the same room. Having more successful projects means getting better at identifying these gaps and misses before they become big problems – whether you’re using waterfall-type project management or agile, iterative approaches. If you can’t understand the problem you’re solving – really understand it – then you’re at risk. In this session, we’ll explain how to develop both understanding as well as empathy for those you’re working with and how to validate both, even when you’re not physically together. Using proven approaches from anthropology, psychology, and urban planning, you’ll develop richer understanding and empathy.
  • A Conversation with the Authors, moderated by Jeff BrownMaster interviewer and host of the Read to Lead Podcast, Jeff will facilitate a conversation with Kevin and Wayne about their new book: The Long-Distance Team: Designing Your Team for Everyone’s Success. He’ll ask questions you hadn’t thought of (but wish you had) and ask some of your questions as well. This will be a interactive, informative and inspirational session.
  • How Does Empathy Improve Results for a Distributed Team? with Sophie WadeWe know how culture is built when we regularly interact with people day after day. But what does this means for teams and organizations who have embraced the "asynchronous mindset"? How do you nurture the culture you want to see, and keep a sense of belonging when real-time interactions become less and less common? Join us in this session to tease out the answers to these very timely questions.
  • Being An Impact Player on a Remote or Hybrid Team with Liz WisemanJoin Liz Wiseman, multiple time best selling author, as we talk about how you can make a bigger impact without working harder, regardless of your role. We’ll talk about the behavioral nuances that will help you be an Impact Player even if you rarely or never see your team in person.
  • Fostering Healthy People Dynamics with Katie McCleary: Heathy cultures provide clear expectations and hold people accountable to shared values and desired behaviors. However, what does it mean to hold someone capable? What can we do to better know our people to help them do their best and bring their best? This talk will explore an easy framework to bring into your interactions with staff to elevate the quality of your work and relationships.
  • Closing: We will debrief the day, talk about our individual and organizational next steps, and close the day with energy and intention.

Join us for the entire day or pick and choose the sessions to fit your schedule!
